The 5 Basic Principles of Skincare

The first thing to bear in mind is that the outer layer of the skin (Stratum Corneum) is the most important and must be protected at all costs.

This is because that layer is what I refer to as the “Protective lid” it is the outermost layer of the epidermis and the major barrier that prevents unwanted materials from escaping into the skin and travelling down the organs, it is worthy of note to discover that it also prevents excessive transdermal water loss.

Bearing in mind that if this layer is compromised, our skin suffers the consequences, in the forms of acne, dermatitis, rosacea, premature ageing etc.

Now to the basic principles of skincare.

  1. Cleanse: Cleansing is the first and the most important step in the principles of skincare, you can not layer beauty products on dirty skin, so this is a step that must be taken. It is crucial though that you cleanse correctly by picking the ideal cleanser, frequency of cleansing as well as water temperature for your skin while at it. Harsh cleansers leave your skin with a compromised barrier, over-cleansing is also to be avoided. Another thing worthy of note is to avoid the use of hot water while cleansing. Daily cleansing with Lukewarm water is most preferred.
  2. Exfoliate: Our Skin is referred to as the largest organ in the body, the one thing this tells us is that the Skin is a living thing, and therefore grows new cells. Because of this, old skin cells constantly build up on the skin’s surface and must be removed to reveal and maintain a more radiant skin tone. Build up of dead skin cells makes the skin look dull and lifeless, so exfoliation is key. Exfoliating the skin as needed also allows easy penetration of other skin care products. Just like cleansing, exfoliation should not be overdone. Physical or chemical exfoliation done at least twice a week keeps the skin in great condition.
  3. Hydrate: Skin cell renewal can be likened to growth in both plants and humans, water plays a very crucial role in this process for both. Keeping the skin hydrated with identical naturally moisturizing elements like hyaluronic acid, Aloe vera gel, glycerine, and amino acids keeps uneven and prematurely ageing skin caused by dehydration and dryness at bay.
  4. Nourish: Nourishing the skin combines moisturizing using emollients and sealing in the moisture with occlusives. This when done daily is a sure way to achieve and maintain healthy and glowing skin. A good nourishing product is rich in emollients like natural oils and butters as well as occlusives like naturally regulated skin-friendly waxes and lanolin.
  5. Protect: the very last step of these principles might as well be tagged the most crucial because, if all the above is diligently done without this fifth step, the effort might be rendered useless. This is because protecting the skin from the potentially harmful effects of the sun’s rays should not be taken lightly. The purpose of sunscreens and sunblocks is to prevent the sun’s rays from damaging the skin. Using a broad-spectrum product can protect the skin from both UVA (associated with ageing) and UVB (associated with burns) and drastically reduce the risk of skin cancer.
